Apheresis is a medical procedure that involves removing some of the components from your blood, while the rest of your blood is returned to you. Blood is temporarily removed from the vein and put through an apheresis machine which separates the blood. This process allows for the collection of specific blood components which, depending on your condition, are replaced with similar components received from blood donors, removed and stored for later use, or discarded.
Apheresis may be used in the treatment of leukaemia or lymphoma, and is often an ongoing treatment.
The Apheresis unit is located in Baxter Wing 6 at University Hospital Geelong.
